  31.    (especially those who are new to the world of archive files) a good idea
  32.    on the range of files and programs you can obtain from major DOS ftp
  33.    sites ...

  35. 2) "useful" ?
  36.    a) most of the programs listed below should enhance DOS in one way or
  37.       another ...
  38.    b) most of them should work on any DOS-based computers (from XTs to
  39.       486s, from monochrome to SVGA, etc ...)
  40.    c) most of them can be run by intuition, i.e. you don't have to read
  41.       the manuals pages after pages to get the programs started ...
  42.       "If an experienced user who is not familiar with the particular
  43.       program is still practically stuck after the first ten minutes, the
  44.       user interface of a PD or a shareware program is unacceptable, however
  45.       good and useful the application may otherwise be." - Timo Salmi

  101. did the tests: "In general, the fastest archiver and de-archiver were PKZIP
  102. 2.04g and its companion PKUNZIP.  The greatest compression was achieved by
  103. ha 0.98 although it was the second slowest (trailed only by "scrnch")."
